Good vs. Evil There are many ways to determine if someone is good or evil depending on what they do and why they do it. Some people do acts of good because they have to and others do it out of the goodness of their heart. Also, there are people
who act evil because that is the way they are and others decide to be evil. Beowulf is an example of someone who represents good and Grendel is someone who represents evil. Beowulf is someone who decides to be good because he wants glory and fame. He wants to be known as the strongest and bravest warrior but also for his heroic deeds for the people. Beowulf decided to go to Herot in order to save the people from the evil monster Grendel, which is very heroic, and Beowulf “proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, now when help was needed” (lines 114-116 page 23) made him seem like a hero. This is an example of good because Beowulf went out of his way and put his life in danger for the good of the people. A hero is willing to sacrifice his life for someone and that is what Beowulf does every battle.
Another example of good is when Beowulf is an old man and he decides to fight the dragon by himself. He does this because he wants to die with glory and this
is a way to die in glory because he is dying trying to protect the people which is an act of good. In a nutshell, a person who represents good is also referred
to as a hero and that’s what Beowulf is. A person who represents evil would be Grendel because he commits multiple acts of evil by killing innocent people for
food. One night when all the people in Herot were drunk and sleeping Grendelsnatched up thirty men, smashed them unknowing in their beds, and ran out with
their bodies, the blood dripping behind him” (lines 37-39 page 22). This is an example of evil because Grendel kills for his own selfish needs and harms
people for no reason. Grendel represents evil because of all the crimes he has done such as killing the thirty men and coming into Herot’s hall and trying to
attack again, but is stopped by Beowulf. Overall, Beowulf represents good because he tries to protect all the people and he never tries to cause harm to
anyone. Grendel represents evil because he causes pain and terror in everyone. Also good is something that will benefit people and evil is something that will
affect people in a negative way.
