Grendel's Mom
Grendel's mother is a nameless character. Grendel's mother wants revenge for the death of her son, Grendel. Beowulf goes to her lair to fight her. Grendel's mother seems to have the advantage early on in the fight since Beowulf's helmet seems to be failing him(lines 601-606). Beowulf tries to cut her head off but her skin is much to powerful for Beowulf's sword. Grendel's mom was winning against Beowulf, something that was never heard of! Beowulf saw his only chance of beating her hanging on the wall, the greatest weapon ever, so great that no ordinary man could even lift it. So be his strength, frustration and desperation, Beowulf uses that weapon to behead Grendel's mom(lines 633-649). Grendel's mother may not have won the battle of revenge against the mighty Beowulf, but, she came close and their battle also brought the monster within Beowulf himself.
